Proper alignment is important when working any technique. In Kenpo we seek the center line. But often this is a rule left out or just plain forgotten. Please note this is not the only defense against an attempted full nelson and you should be learning others to give you different options. A rear attack this close is never good and the end result can be real bad with take downs and body slams. If your stand up defense fails then your ground game will come into play but remember in the street anything goes.

Some things to think about when watching this video, when someone grabs you with one or both hands you have no idea what their intention is. They may grab you to punch you, Knee, head butt, spit, yell, push or pull etc... so the options I'm showing are only a few, but there are many others based on what your attacker does. Most students stay with what the base technique teaches and don't or never train in the what if phase, this is a problem because if the student who becomes an instructor and only does what the book says and never explores the what if phase he or she is limiting their Kenpo development. But remember you must have a solid base technique to work from so hard work training on the mat is a must. In any art it's not how long you been training but how many training hours you been at it that count.

Here Ray Livezey and I are discussing Flashing Wings and how the timing with the strikes and foot work must be combined together to do the most with the least amount of motion. Furthermore the right elbow strike followed by the right knife hand strike are your major strikes from the lead side using your step drag. We isolated the three main strikes in this technique after the push drag to show how hard it is to work against focus mitts. I highly recommend trying these drills in my video series and see for yourself how important it is to feel the timing difference when your hitting a target. Let alone adding in footwork like this technique does, making it that much more complex.

A technique only works for the student in theory until tested. Here we have some different variations of headlock escapes, notice the student is wearing a glove. It is the attackers job to headlock and punch the student in the head as many times as possible. Training like this is important because the student needs to work his escape even if he gets hit in real time. This is the benefit of learning and training in striking arts.
